Doing What We Can Do
Elohim asks us to do what we can do – not what we can’t.
As Children of the Covenant, it is not intended for us to be in a constant state of anxiety - always fearful of God. Instead, we ought to “serve Yahweh with gladness.” [Psalm 100:2] God created us to be mortal. Our spirits were placed into physical bodies, in the midst of a world in which wickedness is ever present. We were not created to be angels, living in the realms of the Kingdom of Heaven, in which there is no evil influence. Scripture is intended to be the pattern for living. The books of Scripture are success manuals for this life. How-To books. Guide-books, maps, and lists of ‘things to avoid’ to help guide us through our time on earth. The rules in Scripture are not intended to oppress us, but to guide us toward happiness. God has not called us to do more than we are able. When we fall short of the Law – the Pattern [and at times we all ‘miss the mark’ of perfection] – we have the Mercy of Almighty God to call upon. We sincerely and humbly ask for forgiveness, with faith in the Redeemer, we receive mercy. Whatever Elohim asks of each of us in this life, it is asked in accord with the abilities and talents we were given. We are not asked or expected to be super-human. We are not called upon to do that which is impossible for us to do. We were each created with weaknesses, limitations, and imperfections. What is most important is that we strive to do our best, serving God willingly and with sincerity. Yahweh already knows the best that we are capable of. Yahweh knows our limits. He gave us our weaknesses. It is no mistake that we are called children. Children are not as skilled, nor as graceful, nor as wise or perfect as their parents. Children must learn. The process of learning to walk like Mother and Dad includes a great deal of falling. The same with learning to ride a bicycle. Learning to speak involves much babbling. Learning to eat with utensils causes many messes. We ought to be loving children, serving loving parents. We want to become like Elohim, yet we must remember that perfection does not come during this mortal life. We can trust that when we do not succeed entirely, if we have tried earnestly, loving Parents will not be angry with us and banish us into exile.
I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and My grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before Me; for if they humble themselves before Me, and have faith in Me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them. ~ Ether 12:27
